Is it worth using a business broker?

Generally, yes, if you're serious about selling. Business brokers handle valuation, marketing, buyer screening, and negotiations, work that takes real time and expertise most owners lack.

The International Business Brokers Association notes that businesses sold with professional representation often close faster and at better terms than those sold independently, partly because brokers maintain buyer networks and keep deals confidential.

The tradeoff is cost, typically a commission of 8 to 12 percent for smaller deals (sometimes called the "Lehman formula" for larger ones).

For very small businesses (under $500,000 in value), the fee can feel steep relative to the payout, and some owners sell privately to save money.

Worth it if: you want confidentiality, lack time, or have a business complex enough to need skilled negotiation.

Less worth it if: your business is tiny, or you already have a qualified buyer lined up.
