Is a Business Worth 3 Times Profit?

Sometimes, but it depends heavily on the type and size of business. The “3x profit” rule is a rough benchmark that has some basis in reality for small, main street businesses.

According to transaction data from BizBuySell, the average earnings multiple across all small business sectors is about 2.57x, with most industries ranging from 2x to 3.3x.

However, 3x is far from universal. Larger businesses, high-growth companies, and certain industries command significantly higher multiples. SaaS businesses, for example, commonly sell for 3x to 10x earnings. Industries like healthcare, technology, and business services routinely exceed 5x to 7x EBITDA.

Key factors that push a valuation above or below 3x include growth rate, recurring revenue, owner dependency, profitability consistency, and industry. A buyer-dependent, slow-growing business might sell for less than 3x, while a scalable, systematized one could fetch much more.

Use 3x as a starting point, not a rule.
